Explore our values

At Casa Oikos, we practice interdependence in our daily living. This means that while we share resources with each other, we all maintain and pursue our own individual and familial aspirations and goals. We lean on our oikogeneia for support, but we don’t depend completely on the group to accomplish our personal vision.

Our Casa Oikos oikogeneia (family) is governed by the Oikos’ three definite but interrelated notions.

Family/Household:
In Greek, the family (oikogeneia) can encompass more than blood relatives, it includes those with strong emotional bonds who share common values, ideas, passions, and aspirations with each other.

A home or household is more than the house or building where a group of people live. A household is the environment of protection, acceptance, and unconditional love intentionally and freely given by each member of the Oikogeneia, which is conducive to the general feeling of well-being of every member of the family.

There are three basic but vital areas in the family/household notion of Casa Oikos which we pay very close attention to. We believe God created us in his image. As a triune Godhead, he formed us to be tripartite, to possess a spirit, mind (soul), and body.

Spirit

We feed our spirit with the daily spiritual discipline of individually meditating in God‘s word, the Bible, and meeting as a group on Sunday morning to study the Bible and worship God together as part of our “On The Way” group.

Mind

In order for our oikogeneia to function as a well-oiled unit, we must constantly work on the health of our minds and on continuously developing better communication skills as we engage in our personal relationships with each other.

At Casa Oikos we accomplish this by spending time together learning cutting edge communication and human relations techniques, using our proprietary program called MindCrafting©

We apply biblical concepts and values as we seek God’s wisdom in our daily interactions with one another.

We believe that laughter is one of God’s best gifts to us, so we practice our great sense of humor as much as possibly possible! 🙂

Body

Our body enables us to accomplish the tasks which will ultimately allow us to reach our aspirations. So, we must empower it with all the possible resources available to serve us effectively for as long as God has us on this side of heaven.

At Casa Oikos, we try to meet our body’s needs with good healthy food, grown on our homestead, frequent physical work, also a great dose of recreational games and adventures!

As children, we are taught to call the building and the land where we live, a house.

Property/House

The word for house in Spanish is “casa”. We decided to call our vision, Casa Oikos because, for us, it reflects more than just a building we all live in or where it sits. It represents a feeling of gratitude and thanksgiving. A love for the material blessings we receive from God.

The apostle Paul, writing to his disciple Timothy, put it this way:
“But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.” I Timothy 6:8

We believe the spirit of Paul’s statement has more to do with the feeling of gratitude, than with settling for having less. Contentment is not having everything you want, but wanting what you already possess.

Here at Casa Oikos, we’re grateful for every material blessing that comes from God, and we welcome more resources that our Creator may provide, as we continue being faithful with the riches we already possess.

Every day, we’re sharpening old skills or learning new ones at our Casa Oikos Homestead.

One of those new skills is Permaculture. Bill Mollison, who developed and promoted it, said this about the practice of Permaculture...

“It is the harmonious integration of the landscape with people providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way.“

We’re integrating different elements of agriculture in the way we practice Permaculture. Aquaponics is one of those elements. We combine fish farming or pisciculture with hydroponics to create a symbiotic ecosystem that will allow us to grow leafy greens all year round in a controlled environment.

We also practice a more traditional method of vegetable growing, using our greenhouse, which houses our tomatoes, eggplant, variety of peppers, and other plants.

Another exciting element of our Casa Oikos Permaculture Homestead is our chickens.

We raise egg-laying hens for their nutritious and delicious farm-fresh eggs.

The Bible says, in Proverbs 12:10

“The righteous care for the needs of their animals…“

We believe in treating the animals that God has put under our care with respect, in that way we’re honoring God first and his creation.

Marlyn calls our chicks “my princesses.” We’re grateful for the protein God provides us every day through those precious hens!

P.S. If you think our chickens are spoiled, you should see our two dogs; Oliver and Emma!
